Our Research Themes

Our research is conducted collaboratively between SFU and agency scientists. Each research group lends its research expertise, enabling impactful and cutting-edge science for priority areas of research for the management of aquatic species.

Habitat Stressors and Restoration

Understanding cumulative effects in freshwater systems was recently identified as a top research priority in aquatic resource management in Canada.

Fisheries Sustainability

We work to understand the factors that impact the sustainability and resilience of fisheries and the fish populations that support them. This includes social-ecological interactions like the impacts of management decisions.

Climate Change and Resilience

Climate change is impacting aquatic ecosystems through changes in water temperature and flow patterns, which could impact fish survival. We are particularly interested in the nexus of climate change with land use and how these could interact to influence survival and population dynamics.

Ecosystem Processes

We aim to better understand ecological processes that connect terrestrial and freshwater habitats and structure ecosystem functioning.

Recovery of At-Risk Populations

Many salmon and other aquatic species are threatened, and understanding the status and pathways towards recovery is urgent.
