Bull Trout Movement

Chudnow, R., van Poorten, B.T., Pillipow, R., Spendlow, I., Gantner, N., & Hinch, S. (2023). Spatial distribution and seasonal movement probability estimates of bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) through a large, uninterrupted river network. Summary

Chudnow et al. (2023) was an important contribution to understanding the natural movements of bull trout through a large contiguous river network. Specifically, it documented annual migrations of well over 100 km for some individuals; most work to date is conducted within watersheds significantly subdivided by dams. Further, this work provides the necessary background information on movement necessary to evaluate alternative management actions for managing bull trout within this watershed. Many alternative regulations considered are area-specific, so understanding seasonal migration is essential to accurately projecting short- and long-term impacts of alternate management decisions.
